Buy Some Happiness

Lorri and Lori

Lorri Flint and Lori Wostl here, from Art Camp for Women and this year we are focusing on Connection.  I (Lorri) just spent a day creating with my sister.  Some women shop and lunch, we do art and lunch!  We’re lucky that we live about 20 minutes apart.  At the end of the day, we give each other a hug and wonder “Why we don’t do this more often?”  Connecting with my sister leaves both of us feeling content and happy!

 Sisters

Lori and I are both reading “The Happiness Project” a #1 New York Times Bestseller by Gretchen Rubin.  I just reached the chapter titled Buy Some Happiness.  I’m grateful that Gretchen did so much research and brought it all together into an easily readable, thoroughly enjoyable account of her year exploring the many aspects of happiness.

In this chapter she explores the relationship of money to happiness.  While it’s true that money doesn’t buy happiness, she notes that “Studies show that people’s basic psychological needs include the need to feel secure, to feel good at what they do, to be loved, to feel connected to others, and to have a strong sense of control.  Money doesn’t automatically fill these requirements, but it sure can help.  People at every level of income can choose to direct their spending in ways that take them closer to happiness—or not.”

Mother and Daughter

She gives “7 Tips For How Money Can Buy You Happiness.”  Her number one tip is to “Strengthen Social Bonds.  Studies show that having close relationships is one of the most important elements of a happy life.”

We heartily agree!  Many women come to Art Camp for Women by themselves since it’s the perfect vacation for a woman traveling single.  From the plane, the shuttle delivers you to our door and from there you’re welcomed into a cozy group of like-minded women.  At the end of Camp, you leave as friends.

Walk in the Meadow

What we really notice is the special connection when friends, sisters or mother/daughter(s) come to Camp.  Their easy going teasing and laughter bring everyone together faster.  These special pairs enjoy relaxed time away from the everyday life of jobs, husbands and children.  There is time for a walk in the meadow, talking into the night and the shared camaraderie of creating art side-by-side.

Friends 1

At the risk of sounding maudlin, I did a little research on the top 5 regrets that people have at the end of their lives.  People consistently report that they wish they had kept in touch with friends.  Our friendships and family relationships tend to be placed on the back burner by the busyness of life when, at the end, all that matters is love and relationships.

We encourage you to tend to your own personal happiness and help spread it to those you hold dear to your heart.  Make a date to do something with your friends and family!  How will you connect?  Comment below and let us know how you like to connect with friends and family.
