Beaded Spool Angel Ornament

Kelli Nina Perkin’s post about making beaded spools got me (Lorri F) all fired up!  I’ve been looking for a new ornament idea and with Kelli’s inspiration, this sweet little angel ornament was created!

The spool was wrapped with white wool roving from my local yarn store and beaded – Kelli style.  The skirt and wings are tulle and the angel’s head is a sweet little felted ball with a needle felted face.  The angel hair is hand-dyed roving bits (mixed with angelina fibers) purchased at our local Handweaver’s Sale.

Wool Roving - needle felted ball - Ball after wet felting

The felted head was made by loosely needle felting a ball of white roving about the size of a ping pong ball, working it for about 5 minutes. Then I dipped the ball into hot water, put soap on my hands and rolled the ball around in my hands with palms together for about another 5 minutes. Rinse the soap out of the ball and let it dry.

I then used hand-dyed roving and felting needles to add her eye lids, nose, mouth and rosy cheeks.
